2022 Bankey Bihari Stampede: Allahabad HC to Hear PIL Seeking Inquiry on Sep 18

Bankey Bihari Stampede

The Allahabad High Court has scheduled a hearing on September 18 for a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking an investigation into the stampede that occurred at Mathura’s Bankey Bihari temple in August 2022.

A division bench of Chief Justice Pritinker Diwaker and Justice Ashutosh Srivastava passed this order while considering a PIL filed by Mathura residents Anand Sharma and another individual.

Last August, during the Janmashtami celebrations, a stampede at the Bankey Bihari temple resulted in the tragic loss of two devotees’ lives and injuries to seven others.

During the previous hearing, the court was informed that the state government is in the process of acquiring five acres of land adjacent to the Bankey Bihari Mandir. This acquisition is part of a plan to construct a corridor aimed at providing better facilities to pilgrims.
