The Campaign for Judicial Accountability and Reforms (CJAR) has on Tuesday has written Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna, seeking an in-house enquiry against Allahabad High Court Judge Shekhar Kumar Yadav.
CJAR has written to CJI in the backdrop of a controversial statement made by Justice Yadav during a speech on Sunday.
The complaint demanded an enquiry for initiating appropriate action against Justice Yadav for his alleged judicial impropriety.
What is the matter?
Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav, a sitting judge of the Allahabad High Court, attended an event organized by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Sunday.
On this occasion, he commented on the issue of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), saying that ‘The country will function according to the majority living in India.’
Justice Yadav said that practices like polygamy, triple talaq, and halala can no longer be justified.
Justice Shekhar Yadav said that a woman, who is regarded as a goddess, cannot be disrespected.
He added that one cannot claim the right to have four wives, the right to practice halala, or the right to pronounce triple talaq.
These practices will not be accepted.
