Myanmarese In Mizoram Sentenced To 10 Years For Heroin Smuggling

Aizawl court has recently sentenced 10 years of rigorous imprisonment to a 26-year old Myanmar national for heroin smuggling.

The court, presided over by Special Court (NDPS Act) Judge F Rohlupuia, also imposed a fine of Rs. 1 lakh on the convict, Bawinungchung.

The state excise and narcotics department spokesperson, Peter Zohmingthanga, confirmed the court’s decision.

Bawinungchung, a resident of Leisen village in Myanmar, was apprehended in February 2021 near Tiau River in the Hnahthial district, close to the India-Myanmar border, with 762 grams of heroin in his possession.

During the trial, he admitted that the smuggled heroin was meant for sale in Mizoram.
