NHRC Takes Suo Motu Cognizance Of Kolkata Doctor Rape, Murder Case

suo motu notice

The National Human Rights Commission took suo motu notice of an alleged sexual assault involving a second-year postgraduate student from RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata.

The NHRC expressed concern that if the media reports are accurate, they represent a serious violation of the victim’s human rights.

The Commission has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police in West Bengal, demanding a detailed report within two weeks. This report should cover the current status of the police investigation, any actions taken against those responsible, compensation provided to the victim’s family, and measures to prevent future incidents.

In related developments, the Calcutta High Court has asked Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, to submit a leave application by 3 p.m. Ghosh’s recent appointment as principal at Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital has sparked protests following his resignation from RG Kar Medical College. Ghosh resigned on Monday, citing defamation on social media after the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College.

The Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court questioned the rationale behind Ghosh’s new appointment, given his resignation under moral grounds. The court has instructed Ghosh to submit a leave application or face a decision regarding his position.

The tragic incident in question involved the death of a postgraduate trainee doctor, discovered on August 9 in a seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College.

The investigation has confirmed rape and murder, with reports indicating that the victim’s body had scratch marks suggesting a struggle. The victim’s family has alleged that she was raped and murdered.
