Police registered a criminal case against a non-local medical student enrolled at the Srinagar Government Medical College for allegedly sharing religiously sensitive content on a caller app.
“Aware of the incident involving the dissemination of sensitive content targeting the religious sentiments of a specific community by a GMC Srinagar student, Srinagar Police has initiated action,” stated a police officer.
The officer confirmed that the police initiated the case following communication from the GMC Srinagar Administration.
The officer urged the public to refrain from spreading rumors or false information and cautioned against falling prey to the propaganda of anti-social elements.
Legal action will be pursued against those engaging in provocative acts or incitement, the officer reiterated.
Protests erupted at GMC Srinagar on Wednesday following a post by a non-local medical student allegedly disrespecting the Prophet Mohammad.
Numerous students and several junior doctors staged a demonstration on the GMC campus against the student, who reportedly posted a profile picture on an app deemed blasphemous by many.
Pending an inquiry, the student was suspended by the medical college administration on Wednesday.
