The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) recently issued notice to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police in response to a media report that a 45-year-old farmer, who’s minor daughter was raped, committed suicide after the police failed to give them justice.

The incident took place at Pilibhit district of Uttar Pradesh.

According to a media report published on May 19, 2023, the girl was abducted by the accused while on her way to meet her father at a farm on May 9, 2023.

The following day, her father filed a police complaint, but the police didn’t file the FIR; instead, instead they forced a settlement between the survivor and the accused in the presence of some relatives.

The police closed the case without contacting or informing the victim’s parents.

Upset with this, the girl’s father allegedly committed suicide on May 17, 2023.

The Commission has determined that if the contents of the media report turned out to be true, it would amount to a violation of human rights.

As a result, the NHRC demanded that the relevant authorities submit a detailed report within four weeks. The reports further claimed that the minor girl belonged to a Scheduled Caste (SC).

Therefore, the report should also include the current status of the case and the distribution of monetary relief to the victim under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Rules, 1995.
