The Bombay High Court on Monday allowed a convicted man to attend his daughter’s wedding. He was convicted of murdering his mother and attempting to eat her body parts.
The Court granted permission for the convict named Sunil Kuchkoravi to be released with a police escort from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on February 23-25, so that he could attend the wedding. It was ordered that the convict be returned to jail by 6 p.m.
A trial court had previously sentenced the convicted man to death for brutally murdering his mother and removing her body organs with the intent of cooking and eating them.
During the hearing, the Bench of Justices AS Gadkari and PD Naik was informed that the man received the death penalty for killing his mother while inebriated, removing her organs, and keeping them on the table.
Advocate Yug Mohit Chaudhari, appearing for the convict Sunil Kuchkoravi, further added that the motive for his actions was unknown.
“We don’t know what motivated them. Even his family is shocked. They all agree that he was a wonderful man. Unblemished record. He used to have frequent headaches, so he used to drink liquor,” Chaudhari explained.
Chaudhari then asked the Court for temporary bail for a week so that Kuchkoravi could attend his daughter’s wedding.
The Court refused to grant temporary bail. However, the Court stated that the accused would be permitted to attend the wedding with a police escort.
Chaudhari, for his part, stated that the Kchkoravi was below the poverty line and would be unable to pay the escort fees.
As a result, the Court exempted him from paying such charges and directed the State’s competent authority to make the necessary payments to the police officers who would accompany the convict.
“We are allowing him to be released from prison for three days only because his daughter’s wedding is coming up,” the Court stated.
In July 2021, a Sessions Judge in Kolhapur sentenced the convicted man, Kuchkoravi, to be hanged by the neck till he is dead for the offense of murder, subject to confirmation by the High Court.
The judge also stated that the case was in the “rarest of rare” category because it shook society’s social conscience. The State government had filed a confirmation petition with the High Court in 2021. The confirmation is yet to be heard.
