The Kerala High Court has issued clear directions to the state government and police authorities to ensure the smooth and uninterrupted conduct of Thrissur Pooram, one of Kerala’s most celebrated temple festivals.
The directive follows public concern and legal petitions over alleged police mishandling during the 2023 edition of the event.
What Bench Says?
A bench of Justices Anil K Narendran and Viju Abraham emphasized the need to uphold the festival’s cultural and religious significance while ensuring that all relevant laws and norms are followed. The judges were hearing three petitions that raised concerns about how the police had disrupted festival proceedings last year.
Police Deployment
The court underlined that any law-and-order concerns arising during the festival should be dealt with in a lawful and measured manner. To prevent a repeat of the issues faced last year, the State Police Chief has now been tasked with overseeing all arrangements.
This includes managing adequate police deployment and ensuring that security measures do not interfere with the essence of the festival.
Disappointment Over Fireworks
Thrissur Pooram, held every April, is famous for its grand elephant processions, percussion music, and spectacular fireworks. However, in 2023, the fireworks display was postponed for the first time in the festival’s history, from its traditional pre-dawn timing to the next day during daylight. The change led to disappointment among thousands of devotees and tourists who attend the event.
Three-Tier Probe Ordered
Following the disruptions, the Kerala State Cabinet ordered a detailed three-level investigation. This included:
A review by the State Police Chief to examine whether the then ADGP (Law and Order) M.R. Ajithkumar had failed in his duties.
A Crime Branch inquiry into any possible illegal activities or criminal wrongdoing linked to the disruption.
An Intelligence ADGP investigation into whether there were lapses on the part of officials responsible for festival arrangements.
Looking Ahead To A Peaceful 2024 Pooram
With the court’s recent intervention, all eyes are now on the upcoming 2024 Thrissur Pooram, which is expected to take place in April. Authorities have been urged to respect the traditions of the festival while ensuring public safety and order.
Court’s directive aims to strike a balance between cultural heritage and law enforcement, ensuring that the mistakes of the past do not overshadow one of Kerala’s most cherished celebrations.
